COUNTRY BOY TALKS LOVE

I was trained in scarcity,
brought up in
“enough is good as a feast.”
Mostly we had enough.

Come, be with me:
my Eve
as we delight in simple things;
the river’s quiet anguish
the slow digestion of riverbank.
Come let us play
children of 40, nay, 40,000
years ago today.
Let us forget today.

Dawn, love me
love me like the someone
you’ve always expected.
Practice on me.

See
freedom and happiness
are not like light and darkness–
the presence of one
does not exclude the other–
nor are they like Sol
and light:
fingers and the hand.

Innocent
we do not believe
everything we are told–
the stars are moons beyond our reach–
and for my ocean
your skin is beach enough.
